His Excellency, President David Adeang delivered a powerful national statement at the General Debate of the 81St United Nations General Assembly in New York, 22 September, affirming the restoration of Naoero as the country’s name, and calls for the UN to invest in the people and economy of Naoero.
“Anga dei-Naoero. I am from Naoero,” President Adeang said across the UNGA.
“We take our seat under that name proud of where we have come from. Confident in who we are. And determined to carry our name into the future.”
He says the choice was not made to erase the past but to honour it with respect for Naoero’s history and gratitude for the journey ‘Nauru’ has led to independence and place on the international stage.
